THE BEST OF MENSWEAR SPRING/SUMMER 2013

Finally, after a 3 month delay due to the monumental amount of work on my own collections, here’s bringing to you The Best of Menswear Spring/Summer 2013; fashionably late, shall we say? Following a decadent fall/winter, spring/summer shows usually leave me quite underwhelmed but then again, it’s that time of the year to take the massive load of heavy clothing off your back and get into something lighter, brighter and shorter. As London finally establishes their own men’s week and New York continues to showcase with its Ready-to-Wear schedule, this post will dissect my top 8 picks from London, Milan and Paris. While London had an extremely refreshing, innovative and youthful approach, Milan held the upper hand with its uber-chic Gods in fitted tailoring and Paris, needless to say, pushed the boundaries of fashion innovation with a classy yet edgy, fashion forward demeanour.

Athleticism, gender ambiguity and boyish youth culture with a raw edge are at the forefront of the season; along with pop art, maritime, swim/sportswear and pop culture references. Pop art, hip-hop, effortless versatility and 70’s references are resplendently blended with sexual, cultural and religious iconography, creating a very mysterious yet reverent feel within the context of ‘The New Man’. Heritage, graphic & artsy prints, glam-rock metallics, stripes, deconstruction and leatherwork are seen in a multitude of amorous fabrics from sheers, silk and suede to python skin, neoprene and knits, producing an exemplary dichotomy of materials. Shorts, ‘3/4ths’ in particular, seem to be one of the biggest trends along with oversized outerwear, an emphasis on layering and ‘easy suits’ catering to a vast demographic. While boxy, squarish, sportswear-inspired silhouettes, dropped shoulders and high-waist ankle-length cropped trousers remain static, biker/bomber jackets, baggy fits against fitted forms, gold hardware and ingenious footwear are things you might want to look out for! Daffodil yellow and candy pink seem to be the most prominent colours, alongside other bright shades such as humid green, intense turquoise, violet and fluorescents. Black, white and tan seem to be going strong for a while now, as are wine, aquatic blues and orange.

I must say Paris has my vote! I love the simplicity and various color hue incorporated. Great post overall!

    • Vir Shete says:

Paris was undoubtedly brilliant, as always, but I’m always in a flux between Milan and Paris, especially when it comes to menswear, since they’re both so amazing yet so different in their own right.
