THE BEST OF MENSWEAR FALL/WINTER 2013

2013 kicks off with gorgeous hunks strutting their stuff in fabulous attire for Men’s Fall/Winter 2013, across the fashion sphere. As energizing as that might be, reviewing and compiling a 100 shows in 3 days (500 in total including Paris Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear) is nothing short of incredibly exhausting, considering the monumental amount of work I do across various creative capacities. Nonetheless, it’s equally awesome and Menswear Fall/Winter 2013 was nothing short of the same. While London stuck to classic British forms with an innovative youthful twist, Milan continued to embrace its sleek, sophisticated anterior and Paris, as always, pushed the realms of fashion innovation with the quintessential combination of innovation, edge, youth and luxury.

A number of interesting trends, new ones as well as ones carried on from previous seasons, present a very eclectic outlook. Luxury, formal sportswear, gender ambiguity and strong sexual nuances are at the forefront of the season, with an apparent bohemian, military, oriental and punk influence. An engrossing mix of classic ideas with futurist thought but with a youthful and edgy yet relaxed tenor, define the mood of the season. Wool, cashmere, mohair, plad, stripes, houndstooth and vibrant graphic, artsy, animal and floral prints are seamlessly juxtaposed against fur, leather manipulations, an array of knitwear, patent, plastic, velvet and tapestry fabrication. The silhouettes, though quite tailored, are petty relaxed and easy-going, with slim fits, boxy/square bodices, dropped shoulders and oversized shapes coming to the lead; with a strong emphasis on the manipulation of volume and proportion, especially concerning outerwear. Surprisingly, the colour palette is much more radiant that usual – emerald green, aquamarine, bright orange, caramel, beige, flesh and neons, alongside much more obvious shades of burgundy, brown, charcoal grey and of course, black and white, with a significant emphasis on colour blocking.
