PARIS HAUTE COUTURE FALL/WINTER 2013 – TOP 10

Though fall/winter 2013 is just starting out for the most of you, the fashion season officially ended in Paris in July with Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013; which does make this post a tiny bit late (for me) but as they say, better late than never. Though the Ready-to-Wear and Menswear shows of the season did brilliantly, Haute Couture left me quite underwhelmed (considering it’s haute couture and the high expectations that go with it), with some hits and some major misses and with some that I simply don’t understand are even allowed to showcase the same. Nonetheless, that being said, the hits (i.e. my top 10 picks) are outstandingly exquisite in their own right and there seems to be an amazing juxtaposition between the traditional and the contemporary, both within design and craftsmanship.

Provocation, Hollywood glamour and a strong ready-to-wear influence are at the forefront of the season, with significant undertones of minimalism, 20’s Flappers, 70’s Punks and modern-day bohemia. Leathers, furs, manipulated lace and tweeds/wools are gorgeously blended with heavy-duty placement embroidery, sequins, brocades and an abundance of florals; along with a strong emphasis on patent/metallic/satin-finished textiles. While majority of the silhouettes are primarily form-fitted, there are an array of exaggerated proportions, architectural detailing and intricate draping, with a nod towards power dressing and Tudor styles and a significant amount of seam detailing, asymmetry, slits, see-through paneling and ball gowns. Navy/electric blue and blood-red appear to be THE colours of season, while silver, burgundy, bronze, gold, nude and white dominate the rest of the colour palette; along with hints of humid green, chrome yellow and innovative colour blocking.
